Who can benefit
Pain sufferers from all over Cleveland benefit from funds raised by Free from Pain. Patients in South Tees Trust hospitals, in the community, in the hospice and those who come to the pain clinic and pain management programmes are also helped by Free from Pain.
TENS
Free from Pain has bought many TENS units to help people in pain. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, and it is a very effective way of relieving pain.
Small impulses that can hardly be felt are sent along the nerves which carry the pain messages to the brain. After a short while these nerves stop sending pain messages to the brain and the pain decreases.
PCAs
When people have major operations, they will probably have a PCA machine to use.
Patient Controlled Analgesia enables patients to give themselves regular doses of strong painkiller, (usually morphine) as often as they need to.
The drug goes straight into the drip in the arm; it does not mean painful injections
